| WOMEN'S FORUM COMMITTEES Thank
you for your interest in the USM Women’s Forum. Below is a brief
description of each committee. If you are interested in serving on a
standing committee please contact the appropriate chair.
Annual Conference
Committee
One of the most active committees of the USMWF, the Conference Committee
works 11 months out of the year to put on our highly successful annual
conference. All USM employees are invited to attend this full day of
professional development offered each fall. The conferences have
historically been held at USM institutions located throughout the
Baltimore-DC corridor.
The first conference was held at UMBC in 1990 offering 5 workshops for 93
participants
To date the annual conference has grown to 24 workshops and 400
participants
System institutions and talent residing within the USM are showcased at
the conferences
The forum prides itself on:
- Quality programming
- Diversity
- Growth in participation
- Superior keynote speakers & workshop facilitators
- Various vendors & exhibitors
- Affordability and being self supporting
Proceeds from the conference provide the majority of funding for
student scholarship and faculty research awards and professional
development awards.
For conference participation consideration (Speakers, Facilitators and
Vendors) please contact Nancy
Horton.
Fund Raising Committee (back)
The Fund Raising Committee strives to identify and develop
opportunities for sponsorship for Women's Forum initiatives, namely
funding student scholarships, faculty research awards, and staff
professional development training. Until recently, the Fund Raising
Committee and the Student Scholarship and Faculty Research Awards
Committees were one and the same. As those awards programs grew in scope,
it became necessary to separate out the fund raising component into its
own committee.
Currently, the Fund Raising Committee is actively seeking members. For
more information about how you can help, contact
Hermetta Hudson.
Policy Committee (back)
The Policy Committee serves as an advocate for USM women on
policy-related issues by undertaking research in these areas and making
findings available to the Chancellor. Past projects include the 1993
"Guidelines for Improvements to Campus Policies on Sexual Harassment" and
the 1996 "Secretarial Pay Equity Report," which alerted the Chancellor to
the use of gender biased factors in job classification. More recently,
the Policy Committee has been finalizing the "Work-Family
Policies/Practices Survey," which questioned HR directors within the
System about their campus's "family-friendly" policies.
The Policy Committee will continue its fact finding with regard to
faculty/staff salary equity, report findings, and recommend any equity
measures suggested by the data.
The Policy Committee will continue its fact finding with regard to the
status of adjunct faculty. One area of interest is new policies
restricting the number of classes adjunct faculty can teach.
The Policy Committee will track legislative issues that pertain to women
in higher education as well as System and campus policies.
The Policy Committee will advocate for women’s commissions on each
campus.
