CHANCELLOR'S CORNER

Revisiting Tenure Requirements
I welcome this opportunity to author a “Chancellor’s Corner” segment in
The Network. I can think of no better issue for this initial foray than
the need to create greater flexibility in the promotion and tenure
processes throughout higher education, particularly with regard to female
faculty.
To help address this issue, the American Council on Education’s Office of
Women in Higher Education has issued “An Agenda for Excellence: Creating
Flexibility in Tenure-Track Faculty Careers.” It advocates
recommendations for greater career flexibility, especially for women in
their child-bearing years.
Our continued exploration of this critical issue hopefully will lead to
needed change in the tenure processes. I envision steps such as those I
recall from my time as President at Ohio State University: re-entry
scholarships for women as well as professional development grants to
women seeking career and scholarly advancement.
This type of innovation is essential to ensuring fair and equitable
opportunities for women and for insuring sufficient faculty to
accommodate the upcoming enrollment boom.

Chancellor
